July, 1950.

The start of the Korean War and the first battle between Communists and American soldiers, the men of Task Force Smith and the 24th Infantry Division. It was a battle that caught the U.S. Army by surprise, a stinging defeat, forgotten in the mists of history.

The Five Days of Osan is a fictional story taking place during the initial battle between Task Force Smith and their communist opponents, a tale of mistakes and incompetence, as well as integrity and courage under impossible circumstances, a tale that hearkens to the Spartans of Thermopylae, where there is victory even in the face of complete defeat.

The Five Days of Osan eBook Jim Dietz

The problem with tying your historical fiction to a specific event is that it will attract two kinds of people: those who want to know about the event and those who already know something about it. To fail in the facts is to do a disservice to the former and annoy the latter. Jim Dietz fails on page two. If your story is about D-Day you can hide your fictional platoon in any of the assaulting regiments and no one will hold you up about it, but Osan is small, Task Force Smith was two rifle companies: B and C. If you add a whole other company it changes the dynamic. Make no mistake, these are "geek" errors. As I said at the beginning, half the audience won't know they're mistakes, but they are so simple to correct, why weren't they?

I won't point out any more of these errors because if you set them aside "The Five Days of Osan" is a good read. Jim Dietz has a good voice for this kind of fiction. His use of the adrenaline rush of soldiers in combat to slow down time and flesh out his combat scenes without dragging down the action is inspired. He keeps the story moving, even in the typical Army "hurry up and wait" scenes. He has a good feel for how much to tell you about his characters in any given scene without boring you. If you can set aside the factual errors, this is a good tale of men at war. I hope Mr. Dietz continues in this vein. The Korean War has a lot of stories to tell and I believe he will only get better at telling them.

The Five Days of Osan eBook Jim Dietz Reviews

I really enjoyed the Five Days of Osan. Dietz does a masterful job getting us into the minds and emotions of the characters.
Based on a true story, the only fillers are that which can never be known. A surprise revelation at the end.
