Author Note This is the first half of an epic fantasy novella series I am writing put into one book. I hope my fans enjoy these novellas as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them. In The Jade Series (Books 1-3), Natasha House creates a magnificently imaginative world and a riveting story.

The land of Jade is a complicated place that’s populated by a number of species — the mystical Wolfinic pack, the Icer tribe led by evil King Lowen, the impoverished and somewhat corrupt Zares, and the death-loving Vullens who kill with a song. Mischievous Deities live in the forest and delight in tormenting the Zares who, for the most part, can’t see them. Once upon a time, the groups seemed to have lived in harmony; however, a disastrous war and unspeakable acts led to the current situation where they live apart with boundaries enforced by death. Despite their separation, the groups remain intertwined by legends and a shared history.

Ms. House’s richly-drawn characters include Otsana, the fierce Wolfinic mother; Deilia, the Vullen girl who's torn between the Vullen desire to watch creatures die and her natural instinct to protect and heal; and two Zare brothers, one who’s a cad with a drinking problem, and the other who’s assumed to be crazy because he can actually see the Deities. There are a number of story lines and each is beautifully told. The stories begin to merge when King Lowen decides to catch a Wolfinic in order to cure his wife from a crippling disease. The only creature that can trap a Wolfinic is a Vullen. And so begins the journey through the villages and kingdoms and forests of Jade.

The Jade Series (Books 1-3) totals 291 pages. I raced through the story, and have already bought Book 4, Cloaked. According to the author, there will be one more book to wrap up the series. I know there are readers who don’t like their stories spread out over a number of books, but this one is definitely worth the investment and what I hope will be a short wait for the grand finale. Natasha House is a gifted writer and I predict, even without a vision stone, that this is the start of a career for a great new talent.

[A note to parents: Some of the content may be too dark for younger readers between the Vullens and their joy at watching others die; violence inflicted by parents on their children; and a number of scenes set in a brothel (not explicit). Kids who can handle the level of violence in The Hunger Games should be fine with The Jade Series.

Book 1
This is a very unique and interesting read with new types of paranormal beings. King Lowen's wife is sick and his only help is the feared enemy. I found myself falling into the story and not wanting it to end. Luckily I own two more in this series.
Book 2
These books do need to be read in order. In book one we learned about all kinds pf new paranormal creatures and some of their back stories. In book two we pick up where we were left and rapidly pick up pace. Something big is about to happen but the author leaves you begging for more. I have fallen in love with these characters, from the babies to the missing elders. I love that the author has included drawings to help you picture her world. Great read.
Book 3
By far the best in the series, highly addictive. Make sure to read these in order so you can keep up. The same characters are revealing their future to us. A king wants to save his sick wife and enlists the help of a vullen. A death caller of sorts. The vullens solution? Grab a wolfinic (Shema is my favorite character). The story ends way to quickly and we are left wondering what happens. Hopefully book 4 is almost finished.
Very interesting story with unique characters in a fantasy world of mythical fairy-type characters, animals unlike any the reader will know, religious and political figures, slaves and laborers, all interact in a collection of related short stories that make up a larger tale that reflect a world where races cannot interact with others, and some are sold to each other as slaves--and still others exist without being acknowledged by others--and yet still others are so out of sight that they are believed to no longer exist. Vullens can kill with a song, and deities can only be seen and heard by one, Rhyme--while the seers are thought to be extinct, except there are stories that they do, indeed, live. The king's wife is not well, and he wants his healthy spouse back, and he will give anything to make that happen, which sets much of the action in this book in motion.

A good story, the book is a challenge to read as it was originally written piecemeal as short stories and then joined as a larger work. It has a choppy flow, and there are grammatical issues that should have been caught before publishing. There are some points where it appears the author ran out of time and failed to give due time to writing a full paragraph and, instead, gave a simple sentence that was supposed to suffice in place of what should have been a rich and full explanation of each such situation.

Despite the issues, though, it is a good book and the conclusion is frustrating when you realize there is a cliffhanger that does not provide a full story for the payment of a complete book--a pet peeve of this reader, who believes even in a series, each installment should have a complete story within itself. However, this author needs to be watched and her early writings prized. With a good editor and some experience, Natasha House will one day be one of the top writers in her genre.
