This book was given to me as a Mother's day present... and I thank my mother-in-law every time I open it! As an organic gardening teacher in a Montessori elementary school, I have found this book to be inspirational to children and grown-ups alike. The photos are gorgeous, of course. But it is the way Larkom puts her gardens together that is the most compelling aspect of this beautiful book. You will never look at your vegetable (or flower) garden the same. Mixing edible flowers into vegetable beds in stunning geometric patterns, weaving intriquing and useful elements like benches and fences out of willow or other local materials, making phantasmagorical trellises for peas and other climbers, creating an environment for you to spend hours of pure joy while eating fresh, organic food... does it get any better than this? The end of the book features an alphabetical listing with pictures and growing info on most of the plants she works with as well as great how-to tips on every aspect of home gardening. My students, after looking through the pictures, cannot wait to get to work making a dream garden for all of us to thrive in. Just buy it!

This is an absolutely beautiful book that has become an essential go-to reference. This is not a book about how to make a vegetable garden. It's an idea book about creating a vegetable garden that is unique, ever changing, and consistently inspiring.
I was telling a friend about this book at a party and realized how much I have learned from this book about potager history, garden design principles, mixing materials, but most importantly--selecting and mixing plants based on function *and* aesthetics.
The author pays so much attention to mixing flowers and vegetables, annuals and perennials, texture, color, height and other features, but in a way that still reads as natural, even slightly wild.
If you love the look of a beautiful garden that appears to have magically come together rather than rows and rows of uniform and segregated plants, you will appreciate how unique this book is.
I own dozens of gardening books and this is probably my favorite.
We borrowed this book from the library in Christchurch New Zealand and loved it so much we just had to own it.
This is a beautiful book! I got so many inspirations from it for my own gardens. This is definitely for the gardener who doesn't want the prim and proper perfect type garden. More rustic and user friendly. The photos are wonderful which is an absolute must for a book like this. Highly recommend.
It's a nice book. But not quite what I thought it would be.
What an utterly beautiful book. It has provided so much inspiration for my garden, I love aesthetics and beauty, can't conceive of a garden consisting of rows of the same crop. It has to be beautiful, and this book has filled the bill. Joy, thank you so much for creating this, I LOVE IT.
