Conscripted for military service at the age of nineteen, Gerard later experiences life-threatening danger when participating in a rescue mission in the African Congo. Apart from his own adventures, Gerard also recounts the fisherman Etienne's story about a terrifying and extraordinary storm he experienced in a trawler off Le Grau du Roi in the French Camargue, when six men lost their lives. The story ends when Gerard is twenty-one. Like the writer, whose name he shares, he joins the hospitality industry to see the world. Throughout the narrative and as he grows up and matures, Gerard struggles to remain true to himself, and to find the correct path in life.

"The Day they Came" is a thought provoking story of a young man's life and his journey to come to grips with several life changing envounters with what many would call the supernatural. It probes some interesting questions regarding the relationship between mankind, the universe, and God. Because this book ends when the author is still a young man, it leaves the reader wondering what other experiences the author has had in the rest of his life related too the central theme. After reading this book, it leaves me waiting in anticipation for the second part, which I hope will be available soon. Written in a clear straightforward style, this book is an enjoyable read. I highly recommeded this book!The Day They Came

Young Gerard's exploits held my interest from the first page to the last. The fact that the author shares the same name as his character made me wonder if these events really happened to him, or were the product of a very creative imagination. Either way, it was an excellent read, and left me hoping that the author will write a sequel. I definitely want to read more of his adventures.
What a delightful read, I didn't want to put it down once I started it. The writing style was wonderfully descriptive, with marvelous attention to detail. I could see Eudoxus and the inside of the ship clearly with my mind's eye as I read. I found this narrative deliciously interesting and entertaining. The fisherman's tale was especially moving. Even a non-ufologist would enjoy it. Breissan (Mr. B) is truly a storyteller extraordinaire! My only dissatisfaction is I need a sequel - a continuation of the story. What happened after age 21? This book would be a great candidate for a Steven Spielberg movie!

Wow! I love a story that is fun to read AND leaves me feeling good about the world. This story scores on both points. Breissan is a masterful storyteller, able to visually transport the reader from the south of France to the Congo while weaving his tale into the fabric of recent history. If you seek an entertaining and uplifting diversion, read this book.
